"The first impression was unmistakable;
immense power, the raw energy unleashed when the entire Zambezi leaps
wildly into a black two kilometer wide abyss. The scale is massive, the
spectacle spellbinding and perpetually changing. The falls hiss and roar
as if possessed, they rumble and crash like thunder. Vast clouds spew
and billow out from the seething cauldron of its dark impenetrable
depths. The moving water creates a magnetism that sucks you closer, so
that you recoil in horror to quench a subliminal sacrificial urge."
Jumbo Williams, Zambezi, River of
Africa. 1988.
Zambia has a lot to offer to both the adventure and leisure traveler.
The land of the walking safari, in one of it's many game reserves. The
land of the smoke that thunders - as Mosi oa Tunya, or Victoria Falls
for those not in the know, is better known as. So called by the Kololo
tribe who lived in the area in the 1800's, because of the columns of
spray that can be seen from miles away as 546 million cubic meters of
water per minute plummet over the edge over a width of nearly two
kilometers into a deep gorge over 100 meters below.
Zambia once was considered to have had some of the highest game
populations in Africa. Factors such as over-hunting and poaching have
significantly reduced the numbers in many areas. Fresh government
controls and new safari camps being built, however, is turning this
around, and today almost 30% of Zambia is under game management. This
makes a safari to Zambia one of the best experiences in Africa. Safari's
in Zambia are ideally suited for "old hands" or those in the look for
something more remote, or exclusive.
With adventures unequalled in any other country, the adrenalin junkie
need not despair. River Boarding, white water rafting, bungee jumping,
flights of the angels, amongst others, are on sample at Victoria Falls,
and these are the stuff adrenalin dreams are made of. For the more
sedate horseback riding or elephant back safari's are also on offer, all
aspects that will make your holiday to Zambia so much more memorable.
